THE INDIANS OF INDIANA
The State of Indiana was named for Indians. Indians occupied a vast majority of Indiana. At the close of the Revolutionary was it was estimated that 20,000 Indians lived her. Most of those lived in the northern parts of the State, in the St. Joseph, Wabash and Maumee valleys. In those days the state were occupied by the Potawatomi, the Miami, the Wea, the Shawnee and the Delaware.
Today, the 2000 Census shows that there are 61,933 Indians living in Indiana. This includes 6 tribes that were at one time or still is native to Indiana. This total is only those who registered in the 2000 Census. How many people of Indian blood that did not register in the Census is unknown, but it is believed that there are at least 1,000, if not more.
