Dealing with Addictions
PREPARE YOUR MIND FOR ACTION
Preparing your mind for action is a key step in dealing with
addictions and attaining an abuntant life. Forewarned is forearmed.
Work from advantage!
- Athletes and scholars alike will contest that the time to
develop strength and understanding is before the competition.
- In both cases, the mind is one of the most critical areas
to prepare. The same is true is the process of recovery.
- Here is a list that will help you prepare your mind for your
next bout with temptation to yield to addictive behavior. Print
or type this list and review it whenever you face temptation.
Place it in obvious places you must cross in supporting addictive
behavior.
- This simple tool will remind you of your need to be prepared
before your moment of need. Modify it to match your life and
specific addiction.
Why Resist?
- Will waste time, or take time from other priorities.
- Will have to eventually correct my behavior anyway.
- Will lower self-esteem.
- Will dilute focus on who I really want to be.
- Will give satan a foot-hold.
- Will continue to reinforce my rut/habit, ie. addictive behavior.
- Will disappoint my loved ones.
- Might lead to physical harm.
- Might lead to illegal behavior.
Access the POWER!
- See this temptation as an opportunity to see God's power in
my life.
- See this temptation as an opportunity to pray for children.
- See this temptation as an opportunity to review "Why
am I at this point of temptation anyway?"
Act for Eternity...
- Memorize Scripture.
- Get up and go.
- Go love a family member (spouse, parent, child, etc.)
- Activate Accountability system.
- Worship.
