The Crystal Valley Striders run club was organized in 1992 to promote running/walking and fitness for interested individuals and families in the Middlebury, Indiana (USA) community. There are no restrictions for membership so that anyone interested in running/walking and fitness may become a member. Annual membership dues are $5 per person or $12 per family. The Striders are involved in many running related activities, but host at least two primary functions during the year: (1) a 10 kilometer road race and 2 kilometer fun run during the late summer, and (2) a series of "prediction" trail runs each Monday evening at 7:00 pm during the summer at nearby Bonneyville Park (see pictures).

In 1996 "prediction" runs will be held at 7:00 pm on nine consecutive Monday evenings in Bonneyville Park (near Bristol, Indiana). We meet at the shelter near the tower. The runs are open to runners and walkers of all ages and experience levels regardless of whether or not you are a Crystal Valley Striders member (members are free, non-members are asked to pay $1 per person each time you participate). The 5 mile course is entirely on park property and does not cross any roads. It is a "trail" run which follows a path over grassy areas, through woods, and up and down hills. Before the run each participant records the time he expects it will take him to cover the course. At the end of the race his actual time is recorded. After all participants have completed the course ribbons are awarded based on the difference between predicted time and actual time, with the first place ribbon going to the person coming closest to his predicted time. For obvious reasons no watches are allowed to be worn during the race! There are typically 65-75 runners/walkers per race, and everyone has a great time. The beauty of it is that you don't need to be fast to do well...just accurate!
The last run of the summer is run with a staggered start. The best time during the summer for each participant (no sand-baggers please!) is used to determine his start time with the person with the slowest time starting first. Others start according to their best times until the person with the fastest time during the summer starting last. Theoretically all participants will finish at the same time if they complete the course in the same time as their fastest time. In this way the winner is determined by the person finishing first.
