Streaming Audio - Internet "Radio" Sites
RealAudio Sites The
tried and true king of streaming audio. Widely used and supported
across many platforms.
WinAmp Sites
via ShoutCast These
tend to come and go quickly because they are cheap & easy to do.
(Better sound than RA, but poor usability, I chalk that up to immature
technology, and look forward to a better front end for streaming audio.
Thank god for playlists!) Drawback: only supported on Windows.
(Was looking to expand into Mac, but politics raised it's ugly head, and
the Mac community may have cheated themselves out of an excellent product.)

Media Player
I give you a warning about MP.
As with many MS products, it seems that they believe that once you have
theirs, you have no need or desire for anyone else's product, so they tend
to rip out file associations and make other PERMANENT changes and upgrades
to your system that have the "side effect" of making it more difficult
to use a competing product. For example, before I loaded the new
MS Media Player, WinAmp's streaming audio function functioned nearly flawlessly,
and I could listen to ShoutCast broadcasts for hours with nary a problem.
IMMEDIATELY after installing Media Player 6.01 Netscape began crashing
and I literally can't listen to a WinAmp broadcast for more than 5 seconds
before I start hearing dropouts. Luckily I'm getting a new HD, as my current
one is nearly at capacity, and I just may reinstall everything on that
one just to see how happily MP will co-exist with WA and RA once I have
more than a few hundred meg free.
