Editorial Cartoons My editorial cartoon work began for The News-Sun and The Evening Star in Indiana in March of 2000. Within four months I'd drawn enough decent material to garner an honorable mention from the Hoosier State Press Association in their annual state-wide contests. My cartoons usually deal with social or cultural issues rather than political ones, and are usually drawn to accompany that Sunday's lead editorial column. This makes them closer to illustrations than pure stand-alone cartoons, but most of them are fairly easy to understand on their own. I have two basic approaches. When the cartoon's subject matter is a bit more serious, the art will reflect that by being more detailed and complex. On other occasions, it is very cartoony and minimalist. I also experiment with different techniques, sometimes using pencil or pencil-and-wash in addition to the usual pen-and-ink cartooning I do.
