Important News!
Spoofed Notices from Trusted Senders
Many email users around the globe have been receiving notices that appear to come from eBay, PayPal and other companies requesting that you click on a link to update your account information. Be aware that the links on these emails will direct you to a spoofed web site where unsuspecting users are asked to provide personal and credit card information.
eBay's policy is not to send out such notices. If there is a problem with your account, you may be requested to go to eBay.com and login to the My Account section to make changes and updates to your account. PayPal's policy is the same, as are most companies. Please be sure to ready any privacy information for any company you perform online transactions with. You will never be asked to click on a link in an email to update account information.
These notices are sent directly to users and come from what appears to be a trusted sender, which allows the messages to pass through SPAM Protection products. Also, beware if you receive a notice from your ISP or any other company. We will never send notices requiring you to login to a web site and make changes to your account. If there is a problem with your account, one of our customer service representatives will contact you by phone to authorize changes to your account. At this point in time, there have been no reports of fraudulant ISP emails. However, the first rule of staying safe is to stay aware!

Windows Quick Launch Toolbar
This tech tip is for users of Windows 98, 98 Second Edition (SE), Millennium Edition (ME), 2000, and XP.
If you have a few programs you use
daily, add shortcuts for them into the Quick Launch area, which is located to the right of the Start button. Drag the shortcut from the desktop into that area.
If that doesn't work or you don't see the Quick Launch toolbar, you probably need to enable it. To enable the Quick Launch toolbar complete the following steps:
1. Right-click the taskbar (the bar at the bottom)
2. Click Properties
3.On the "Taskbar" tab, select Show Quick Launch (an example for Windows XP is below)

The Quick Launch toolbar is extremely convenient for quick access to your favorite programs.

Hot Site of the Month** |

Almost everyone has that one friend or family member who often forwards email messages. Many of these messages contain news and stories that seem to be true... or are they? The latest popular forwarded rumor called for a boycott of gasoline sales on May 19, 2004. This proved to be a hoax as have many other forwarded messages on the Internet. TruthOrFiction.com is a web site where Internet users can quickly and easily get information about eRumors, warnings, offers, requests for help, myths, hoaxes, virus warnings, and humorous or inspirational stories that are circulated via email.
Created by broadcaster Rich Buhler, TruthOrFiction.com has a reputable source. Mr. Buhler has appeared on many national and international television shows and stations such as CNN, Fox News, BBC and NBC. His interest in rumors and urban legends started when Rich worked for CBS in Los Angeles. Rich hosted a nationally syndicated talk show during which he would dispel rumors and urban legends.
In 1998, Rich started TruthOrFiction.com and began publishing "The eRumor Report," where he would uncover the popular rumors that surface around the Internet. TruthOrFiction.com is truly a one-stop-shop to check out the truth on eRumors!

News Briefs
Apple Patches 'Critical' OS X Flaw
Earlier this year, known vulnerabilities and viruses were reported and confirmed by Apple Computer. Now security researchers have found a combination of new holes in the operating system code. Although Apple released a partial fix last month, they are now releasing a full patch for the recently found security holes. These patches can be downloaded using the Mac Software Update software. As with a Windows-based computer, update your Macintosh when patches are available!
Toolbar Spread By Internet Explorer Flaws
Flaws in Internet Explorer are giving some adware companies a small advantage in spreading their software. Microsoft has reported that criminal charges could be pressed against companies who take advantage of these vulnerabilities by sneaking unwanted advertising software onto a computer. Patches that have been released on Microsoft's Windows Update web site have corrected these security holes.
International Downloaders Not Immune From Lawsuits
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) announced that it will file lawsuits for online music downloading for over 230 people in Denmark, Germany, Italy and Canada. To date, almost 3,000 lawsuits have been filed in the US alone. Many local industries have already settled lawsuits for copyright infringement. CNN is reporting that online music swapping has decreased 30% last month from an all time high trading of one billion illegal music files in June of 2003.
